A headache clinic can help you get a specific diagnosis (or confirm one), identify potential causes or triggers, and provide optimal headache management. The goal is to reduce the burden and effects of headaches, improve your quality of life and work productivity, and offer options for headaches that are frequent, interfering with your life, or not responding to treatment — including when you feel you are taking too much prescribed or over-the-counter medication.

A headache clinic is not for everyone. If you have a new type of headache or a change in your headache, this may be an emergency and a visit to the emergency department is warranted. Seek emergency care if a headache is associated with fever, stiff neck, changes in mental status, weakness or numbness, malaise, difficulty speaking, changes in blood pressure or pulse, or is a new headache over the age of 50.

Patients learn how to modify their lifestyle and living environment to suppress migraine development. Dr. Napchan coaches patients to identify triggers that may initiate a migraine, adopt activities and behaviors that reduce their risk, anticipate an episode in time for prevention, and use coping methods for pain reduction when a migraine does occur. He is an advocate for neuropreventative health education, and individualized treatment plans may incorporate medication to supplement this approach.
