Interventional Cardiology / Cardiovascular Disease

Dr. Shapira is board certified in Interventional Cardiology as well as Cardiovascular Disease. He is a graduate of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology Medical School, one of the world's top research centers. He remained at Technion's Rambam Medical Center to complete his internal medicine internship. He worked two years as Internist and Medical Director of Corp of Engineers construction project in Israeli Negev and Sinai Desert. Before entering medical school, he served active duty in the Israeli Army and is a veteran of three wars. He remained in the service as a reservist for over a decade, serving as a paratrooper and attaining the rank of captain.

In 1983, Dr. Shapira moved to the United States and served his internal medicine residency at Interfaith Medical Center/State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He was fellowship-trained in cardiology at Chicago's Christ Hospital and Medical Center/Rush Medical College. In 1989, he joined the VA at Asheville NC, where he was selected as Consulting Associate in Cardiology at Duke University Medical Center. In 1991, Dr Shapira joined a cardiology group in New Orleans, Louisiana, providing full range of adult cardiology services. After several years, he opened a solo private practice in affiliation with many of New Orleans' major hospitals. Building the practice from the ground up, he provided leadership in all aspects of invasive and interventional cardiology. As a result of hurricane Katrina he moved to Southwest Mississippi to accept the position of Interventional Cardiologist and Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Institute of Mississippi. As a member of the extraordinary cardiology team at Middletown Medical, Dr. Shapira has special interest in cardiac catheterization, coronary and peripheral angioplasty, stenting, pacemakers defibrillators and more.

A private pilot, Dr. Shapira enjoys flying as a hobby. He is married to Yona Shapira, Ph.D with two adult children who live and work in Manhattan.
