Press Releases
Middletown, NY: Beginning this month, Middletown Medical, a multi-specialty physicians' group with offices in Middletown, Monroe and Ellenville, is offering coronary calcium scoring (also known as a cardiac CT scan) to anyone interested for a nominal fee of $100 at their Middletown location at 111 Maltese Drive (behind Denny's restaurant on Route 211). Using their state-of-the-art 16-slice CT scanning machine, the technologist is able to take crystal clear images of the heart to enable physicians to detect and measure the coronary calcium present in the arteries. This measurement can be used as a marker for atherosclerosis, which is an accumulation of plaque in the blood vessels, and can be an early detector of heart disease. This test is appropriate for men over age 45 and women over age 50 if they have no other contributing risk factors. Earlier screening may be warranted if risk factors are present. This scan is not covered by insurance so the fee will be collected at the time of service.
For more information about cardiac CT scanning, visit www.middletownmedical.com. To schedule a scan, call 845-342-4774.

Middletown, NY: The Sleep Center at Middletown Medical will be hosting Sleep Disorders Awareness Day on Wednesday, March 3rd from 10am to 1pm at the Middletown office at 111 Maltese Drive (behind Denny's on Route 211). The focus will be on helping people to get a better night's sleep through providing facts, information, product demonstrations and, if individuals are interested, an evaluation for a sleep study by one of our pulmonologists. Many people don't realize there are serious health risks associated with a recurring sleep disturbance or sleep disorder.
Sleep is an essential part of life. Without it, the body suffers emotional and physical damage, including various increased physical risks for your heart and brain, as well as a decline in overall well-being. Individuals who are properly treated for a sleep disorder can experience a decreased risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and many other chronic illnesses; improved memory, concentration and learning capabilities; a boost in their immune system; and improved mental and emotional health. If an individual experiences any of the following symptoms, they could benefit from a sleep study at The Sleep Center at Middletown Medical: snores loudly; stops breathing or gasps for breath during sleep; feels sleepy or dozes off while watching TV, reading or driving; has trouble sleeping more than three nights a week; or experiences interruptions during sleep.
For more information about the new hours or other services, call 845-342-4774.

Middletown, NY: The staff at Middletown Medical raised patients and their families’ awareness of thyroid disease during Thyroid Awareness Month by providing information and an expert to answer questions. Most people don’t realize the impact of the thyroid gland on their overall health, which can then lead to other health problems. Symptoms such as sudden weight gain or loss, fatigue, nervousness, increased sweating and cold hands or feet can indicate a problem with the thyroid gland. A simple blood test can determine if the thyroid is working properly.
The thyroid is an endocrine gland that plays a key role in regulating growth, development and normal function of the body. It is a butterfly-shaped gland just above the collarbone that affects the metabolism, meaning the way that the body gets energy from the foods that are eaten. Millions of people in the United States have thyroid disease, most being women, where either thyroid hormones are over-produced, under-produced or both. Treatments for thyroid disease range from medications to surgery, depending on the type and severity.
If you have questions about thyroid disease, call 845-342-4774. Most insurances accepted.

Middletown, NY: Middletown Medical now offers, through its on-site laboratory, a new, state-of-the-art blood test that can determine if a person is allergic to 36 of the most common allergens in our region. These include trees, weeds, grasses, danders, molds and foods. One major benefit of this test in place of the more common skin prick test is that there are no side effects if the person is allergic like itching or redness. Another benefit is that the person does not need to stop taking their current allergy medication. With other tests, the person needs to stop taking their antihistamine for three to thirty days prior to the test, which can be very difficult. With allergy season approaching, many people suffer unnecessarily with allergies that could be easily treated.
An allergy is an overreaction of the body's immune system to an ordinarily harmless substance. Allergies are not just seasonal. They exist throughout the year and affect people of all ages. Allergies can impair performance, interfering with sleep, cognitive skills and, occasionally, can cause anaphylaxis, a potentially life threatening reaction. To determine if a person is allergic to a particular substance, a physician needs to identify the allergen, establish a causal relationship between exposure and the symptoms and then determine the best treatment. Treatment options include avoidance of the allergen, oral medications and allergy shots.
For more information about this new blood test, please call 845-342-4774.
