MIDDLETOWN MEDICAL HOSTS CPAP MACHINE WORKSHOP
Middletown, NY: As part of their Health Education Network, the staff and physicians at Middletown Medical will be hosting a free workshop for individuals with CPAP machines at their Middletown office (111 Maltese Drive) on Thursday, June 9th from 5pm – 7pm. For people with sleep apnea, using a CPAP machine at night is a way of life. To get the most help from this machine, it needs to be cleaned and checked frequently, including getting new masks, tubing and filters. This workshop makes experts available to evaluate any CPAP machine and make recommendations based on its functioning. Individuals need to bring their CPAP machines to be cleaned, evaluated and to have questions answered about them. Additional sleep disorder information will also be available.
CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. A CPAP machine provides air at a constant prescribed pressure through a tube and out of a CPAP mask to a person with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. CPAP therapy provides a constant airflow which holds the airway open so that uninterrupted breathing is maintained during sleep. This eliminates sleep apnea events and allows the patient to get a restful sleep. The pressure of the air is determined during a sleep study.
No pre-registration is required for this free program. For more information, call 845-342-4774.

Echocardiography Lab Receives Accreditation at Middletown Medical
Middletown, NY: Middletown Medical recently received re-accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL). The laboratory is one of a select group to be recognized nationwide for its commitment to high quality patient care and its provision of quality diagnostic testing.
One American dies every 32 seconds of cardiovascular disease, disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, costing society over $83.7 billion each year in health services, medications and lost work time due to disability. Cardiac structure and flow information provided by echocardiographic testing is useful in the detection and management of many types of heart disease. This noninvasive test has become one of the standard diagnostic tools in cardiology with an estimated 10 million completed each year. Echocardiography is a complex imaging technique that relies on the experience and training of both the physician and sonographer. The ICAEL has developed an accreditation program which evaluates the quality of these and other critical elements of an echocardiography laboratory.

MIDDLETOWN MEDICAL OFFERS ALLERGY AND ASTHMA DAY
Middletown, NY: As part of their Health Education Network, the staff and physicians at Middletown Medical will be hosting a free Allergy and Asthma Information Day on Tuesday, April 26th from 10am-2pm in their Middletown location at 111 Maltese Drive (behind Denny’s on Route 211). Staff from our Pulmonary Medicine department as well as a respiratory therapist from the American Lung Association will be available to answer questions, demonstrate breathing techniques and provide information. According to the American Lung Association, asthma is a lung disease that makes breathing difficult for millions of Americans, both young and old. There is no cure for asthma, but the good news is it can be managed and treated so you can live a normal, healthy life. The Allergy and Asthma Foundation classifies allergies as diseases of the immune system that cause an overreaction to substances called "allergens." Allergies are grouped by the kind of trigger, time of year or where symptoms appear on the body. The focus of this program will be on seasonal allergies or ‘hay fever’.

Botox Injections Offered at Middletown Medical for Chronic Migraine Pain
Middletown, NY: The Headache Clinic at Middletown Medical, the first of its kind in Orange County, is offering Botox injections as a treatment for chronic migraines. Recently, federal health officials approved the wrinkle-smoothing injection Botox for the treatment and prevention of chronic migraine headaches in adults. In a statement, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended Botox be injected approximately every three months around the head and neck to dull future headache symptoms. They approved it for patients who experience 15 or more days of migraine headaches per month.
Approximately 3.2 million people in the U.S. have chronic migraines, though some 80 percent of them have never been diagnosed as having the disease, according to the maker of Botox. The World Health Organization ranks migraine as the 19th most disabling disease. Women are three times as likely as men to suffer from migraines, which are also linked to depression and anxiety. Experiencing a migraine on most days "is one of the most disabling forms of headache," said Dr. Russell Katz, of the Division of Neurology Products in the FDA's Center Drug Evaluation and Research. "This condition can greatly affect family, work, and social life, so it is important to have a variety of effective treatment options available."

MIDDLETOWN MEDICAL TO HOST SLEEP DISORDERS AWARENESS DAYS
Middletown, NY: The Sleep Center at Middletown Medical will be hosting Sleep Disorders Awareness Day on Wednesday, December 1st from 10am to 1pm at the Middletown office at 111 Maltese Drive (behind Denny’s on Route 211). The focus will be on helping people to get a better night’s sleep through providing facts, information, product demonstrations and, if individuals are interested, an evaluation for a sleep study by one of our pulmonologists. Sleep is an essential part of life. Without it, the body suffers emotional and physical damage, including various increased physical risks for your heart and brain, as well as a decline in overall well-being. Individuals who are properly treated for a sleep disorder can experience a decreased risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and many other chronic illnesses; improved memory, concentration and learning capabilities; a boost in their immune system; and improved mental and emotional health. If an individual experiences any of the following symptoms, they could benefit from a sleep study at The Sleep Center at Middletown Medical: snores loudly; stops breathing or gasps for breath during sleep; feels sleepy or dozes off while watching TV, reading or driving; has trouble sleeping more than three nights a week; or experiences interruptions during sleep.
For more information, call The Sleep Center at 845-342-4774, Extension 331.
